Most San Diego contractors claim thirty or forty-two years by adding up the experience of everyone on the payroll. At Ultrascape, those forty years belong to one owner and one company, continuously since 1984 — and that owner still directs every project, with the work performed by in-house crews.
Darren Earl founded Ultrascape Construction in 1984. Four decades later, we still work the way we did on the first job: the owner directs every project from concept to completion, and all work is performed in-house. The Better Business Bureau opened our file in 1994 — thirty years of documented history, an A+ rating, and no construction complaints on record.
One homeowner came to me after four concept design attempts by other contractors, each one costing more while fixing less of the property’s real problems. By the time we arrived, the yard felt chopped up and awkward, with circulation, views, and everyday use never fully thought through.
My team and I specialize in finding those functional, structural, and aesthetic issues early in the planning phase—when changes are still free—so clients avoid paying for design mistakes in construction or ending up with a space that doesn’t feel right once they’re living in it. In her case, a fresh, carefully thought-out concept brought the cost down $30,000, improved how the yard worked, and finally made the space feel like somewhere she wanted to be.
That kind of careful, client-first thinking is why so many of our customers stay with us for years and often become lifetime friends.
A hundred little things we do that you’ll never see on a brochure.

One team. One contract. One person responsible. One smooth, on-schedule build.
Most residential outdoor projects in California are coordination problems disguised as construction. A separate designer, pool builder, mason, electrician, and landscaper — each one pointing at the others when something slips or fails.
Ultrascape handles every phase in-house: design, engineering, demolition, excavation, masonry, concrete, pool construction, plumbing, electrical, lighting, planting, and irrigation. We pull the permits. We run the inspections. You call one number from the day we break ground to the day we light the final fixture.
No subcontractor chains. No finger-pointing. No delays from “waiting on another crew.” Just a single, integrated structure that allows rapid, flawless implementation in your outdoor space.
Function, then structure, then beauty.
Every project runs in the same order. We begin by understanding how you want to use your space — how you move through it, where people gather, and the views and amenities that draw you into those areas.
We treat the budget not as a number, but as a tool to create value for your family with every penny spent. Then we build the structure that makes it last: concrete, steel, masonry, and engineered retaining walls. Beauty comes after that, not before.
Most failed projects aren’t just built wrong; they’re planned wrong.
It takes experience to discover and resolve project pain points in the planning stage. In our forty-two years as a company, that’s been a hallmark of our success: project success is decided during planning, not during implementation. When we solve the pain points and get the layout and the structure right, serenity and beauty follow naturally.
See how we build →A clean record is a regulatory fact, not a slogan.
California holds contractors legally liable for ten years on every structural element they build. We’ve carried that exposure — clean — for four decades.
